Severne Gear on Tour: Psycho & Freek
June 24, 2026
For a long time, Severne has been a consistent supporting partner of the Freestyle Pro Tour, with a strong presence across both the men’s and women’s fleets. With multiple riders chosing the Freek and Psycho as their weapons of choice, the brand has been a regular feature at the top end of the FPT rankings.
Nowhere has the Severne gear pairing been as dominant, as in the Women’s fleet. Maaike Huvermann has been tearing it up on the Freek long before her breakthrough title in 2018. Since then, she’s gone on to win 7 European freestyle titles, all while continuing to rip on Severne equipment, making the jump onto the Psycho in 2021 as well.
In the men’s fleet, the Freek first hit the top step in 2015 with Amado Vrieswijk, who later added another title in 2021. From there, the sail saw a new dominant phase with the rise of Lennart Neubauer, who has taken three consecutive FPT titles from 2023 to 2025, all while wielding the Freek.
Alongside these two champions, emerging big names in the freestyle world such as Takumi Moriya have been absolutely tearing it apart on the Psycho/Freek pairing in recent years. Putting all that together brings the Freek to 12 European/FPT titles, 5 of those achieved paired up with a Psycho, making it one of the most successful freestyle sails on the tour.
On the product side, Severne doesn’t really chase safe solutions. The Freek and Psycho are both pretty radical in their own way. Unique designs, extreme in concept, lethal on the water. The Freek is still the only 5-batten freestyle sail on the market, while the Psycho remains one of the shortest production freestyle boards you’ll find on the water.
Different approaches, same outcome: gear that keeps showing up at the top level.

From the Riders
“The Psycho feels really compact and easy to throw around. That’s something I loved about the board from the first time I sailed it. Everything happens a bit quicker and with a bit less effort, but it still feels very natural on the water.”
“The board is percise in the best way possible – it does what you ask it to do without feeling difficult. At the same time, I think it’s also forgiving. If you don’t land a move perfectly, there’s often still enough room to save it, or the board will still complete the rotation even if the take-off wasn’t perfect.”
– Maaike Huvermann on the Psycho
“Since I’m a heavier rider, I like to hold onto a bigger sail as long as I can: with the 5-Batten Freek I can hold onto the sail for longer, so I can have the benefits of a stable sail with a lot of power in stronger winds. A big reason why I like it is that it’s very controllable and very predictable when I duck and during my moves; and I think that’s extremely important for a freestyle sail. (…) I can rig my sail the exact same, no matter if it’s 20 knots or 40 knots. I don’t have to change anything, because I want it to feel exactly the same every session.”
“If you want your Freek operating at a World-Class level I think paying attention to the battens is very important. I like having the top 3 battens tighter with no wrinkles, at a point just before they start bending on their own is the sweet spot. The bottom batten I leave completely loose and wrinkly and the second one from the bottom I have medium to low tension on it. That’s a tuning tip I’d give to someone rigging a Freek.”
-Lennart Neubauer on the Freek
Beyond pure fin freestyle, Severne also leads the way in Foilstyle development, with Balz Müller spearheading the operation. With dedicated gear like the Predator Foilstyle board and the R4D 4-batten freestyle/foil sail, Severne currently sits at the forefront of gear development on the market. Stay tuned – a deep dive into the foil gear is coming soon!
