Flashback Friday | Break the Surface: 2021 Season

We’re kicking off Flashback Friday — a brand-new weekly series where we dig into the Break the Surface archives and release them on YouTube for the very first time. These episodes offer a unique look at the evolution of the Freestyle Pro Tour, showcasing both competition highlights and the behind-the-scenes energy that fuels each stop.

In the Pilot episode, we take a look back at key moments from 2021 and a final event in 2022, taking you to Lake Neusiedl (Austria), Silvaplana (Switzerland), Theologos (Greece), and Geneva (Switzerland). This was a groundbreaking time for the sport. A return to freestyle action after a quiet 2020 due to the pandemic saw riders more excited and competitive on the water than ever. Engadinwind and Geneva pushed tow-in freestyle to new heights, with rapidly evolving moves and the sends getting bigger and bigger. Geneva also played host to the first-ever Foilstyle event, marking a historic step forward in windsurfing innovation.

On the competition front, many of today’s top names were already in the mix—Yentel Caers, Steven van Broeckhoven, and Jacopo Testa were dominant forces, laying down the same world-class level we see today. But this episode also captures the early stages of the next generation. Many now-familiar names such as Lennart Neubauer and Bodhi Kempen were still climbing through the junior ranks, giving a glimpse of what was to come. You’ll also catch appearances from several legendary riders who are no longer active on tour—making this episode a true time capsule for freestyle fans.

Stay tuned to freestyleprotour.com and our social media channels every Friday as we continue the series— new episodes, classic footage, and the full story of the Freestyle Pro Tour as it unfolded!
