Danish Open 2026: Mathias Vingaard Dominates in 3-Day DBO Freestyle Frenzy

The 2026 Danish Open delivered three days of full-power freestyle action. In classic DBO fashion, the competition took place in classic Limfjord freestyle conditions: flat water, small rolling chop and gusty westerly wind, but with long enough gusts to give the riders plenty of chances to build proper heat scores.

While Løgstør served as the event base, riders stayed mobile throughout the event in search of the best conditions around the Limfjord region. Day one saw the fleet move to Feggesund North, where gusty westerly winds and flatwater conditions allowed for the completion of the single eliminations across A-Fleet, B-Fleet and Juniors.

One of the major stories of the event came from Melina Schütt, the only female rider competing in the A-Fleet who immediately proved she could challenge the top men in the fleet. Her run in the single included a special heat against her brother Mathias Vingaard in the singles, with her consistency throughout all her heats being rewarded by the end, earning her an impressive third overall by the end of the competition.

The semifinals delivered some of the best heats of the singles. Kasper Gaj Nielsen and Nicolai Boje Frandsen renewed their growing rivalry after already sharing several close battles at previous events. Kasper opened strongly with Clew First Spock, Flaka, Forward and Shove-It combinations, but Nicolai kept steadily upgrading throughout the heat with Funnel 360, Switch Kono, Flaka 360 and eventually a decisive Double Spock to secure his place in the final.

On the other side of the ladder, Bjørn Olesen continued his impressive run through the event, working on upgrades to his Funnel and Forward Loop game, but Mathias Vingaard proved unstoppable. Huge moves, including even pushing Kabikuchis in the tricky conditioins saw Mathias deliver one of the strongest heats of the entire single elimination to advance comfortably into the final.

The standout battle of the singles however came in the A-Fleet final between Mathias Vingaard and Nicolai Boje Frandsen. Nicolai fought hard over the course of the heat, but Mathias stayed on top, filling his scoresheet with a massive range of moves including Culos, Konos, his signature Shove-It Spock, Air Funnels and Skopus to secure the single elim win with 26.9 points against Nicolai’s 17.6.

Day two brought a completely different challenge as the fleet relocated to Feggerøn Tange for the double eliminations in full-power southern winds. The spot delivered “cold Leucate” style conditions with flat water one way and tight chop the other, serving up a perfect skatepark-style playground.

Melina Schütt produced one of the standout performances of the doubles, climbing through the losers bracket with heat wins over Asger Fonnesbech, Kasper Gaj Nielsen and Bjørn Olesen to secure third overall. Meanwhile Nicolai Boje Frandsen stepped up the level even further, defending his Second position against Melina, and then landing Double Spocks, Double Funnels and Double Flaka attempts throughout the finals.

But once again, Mathias Vingaard proved untouchable when it mattered most. Combining powerful execution with huge move variety, Mathias answered with a Kono, Culo, Air Funnel, Burner Funnel and massive Air Skopus to lock in another dominant victory in the super final with a huge 30.1 point heat score – the highest throughout the entire event.

Throughout the event, the “anything goes” B-Fleet once again welcomed new and less experienced riders into the competition. Jesper Skov Nielsen took victory despite Henrik Aalborg Nielsen pushing him hard in the final with clean riding of his own. Phillip Hohwy also earned respect across the beach, battling through back pain while still throwing Air Jibes and Helitack attempts in difficult conditions, perfectly capturing the all-inclusive and progression-focused spirit of the Danish Open.

The event closed with a “one-handed moves only” supersession, with riders throwing one-handed Flakas, Burners, Culos and Spocks directly in front of the judges before the fleet headed south for one final freesailing session at Ahl. There, Mathias Vingaard even hosted a “Duck-F*ck Prevention Clinic” before everyone hit the water one last time to close out three unforgettable days of Danish freestyle action.

Final A-Fleet honors ultimately went to Mathias Vingaard ahead of Nicolai Boje Frandsen and Melina Schütt, while Bjørn Olesen claimed victory in the Junior division and Jesper Skov Nielsen secured the B-Fleet crown.
